An evaluation serves many purposes:

  • Identification/Referral: To identify children who need special education and related services.

  • Eligibility: To determine whether a child is a "child with a disability" under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) definition.

  • Planning an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for children ages 3-22: To develop goals and plan service delivery.

  • Planning an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) for children ages birth-2: To identify the major results or outcomes expected to be achieved for the child and family.

  • Instructional strategies: To determine ways to help a child learn.

  • Measuring progress: To provide a present level of performance for measuring a child's progress.

1.First identify  them

Definitions Includes definitions of the 14 areas included in IDEA under the lead definition of "child with a disability.”

2.Evaluation and Identification
Includes detailed information on the process of evaluating a child in order to determine if he or she is eligible to receive special education services.

3.Characteristics and Strategies
Includes clear explanations of the defining characteristics of certain disabilities and specific strategies to address these characteristics.

4.Parents and Teachers 
Includes information regarding the federally mandated specific rights for parents or legal guardians of children with disabilities, special education terms and acronyms, and more.
